Ampicillin Stability in a Portable Elastomeric Infusion Pump: A Step Forward in Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy

چکیده
Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) with continuous infusion pumps is postulated as a very promising solution to treat complicated infections, such endocarditis or osteomyelitis, that require patients stay in hospital during extended periods of time, thus reducing their quality life and increasing the risk complications. However, stability studies drugs elastomeric devices are scarce, which limits use OPAT. Therefore, we evaluated ampicillin sodium chloride 0.9% at two different concentrations, 50 15 mg/mL, an pump when stored refrigerator subsequently real-life conditions temperatures, 25 32 °C, without cooling device. The mg/mL stable for up 72 h under refrigeration, allowing subsequent dosing °C 24 device, but its concentration drops below 90% after 8 h. In contrast, only remains first administration room temperature not possible, even system. Our data support AMP suitable OPAT if volume rate tailored dosage needs treatments.

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy today.
Since its introduction in the 1970s, outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) has become a standard modality for patients with many infections requiring long-term intravenous antibiotic therapy. Delivery of OPAT may occur in physicians' offices, hospital clinics, specialized infusion centers, and currently most often, patient's homes, often self-administered. Patients are selected for...

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) programs are a current and widely spread trend in clinical practice because of it's a cost-effective option, it's associated with a greater comfort for the patient, a lower risk of nosocomial complications and an important cost saving for the health care system. OPAT is used for treating a wide range of infections, including skin and soft tissu...

Although outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is practiced internationally, there is a paucity of data regarding outcomes of paediatric OPAT. A retrospective analysis, of 3 years experience (January 2010 to 2013) was performed at a tertiary paediatric Respiratory unit. There were 362 OPAT courses administered to 32 children, of which 30 had cystic fibrosis and the remaining two ha...

OPAT can be used to treat patients with a variety of medical conditions in a variety of settings. It offers the opportunity for improved efficiency and patient choice through early discharge from hospital or the ability to avoid admission, while maintaining quality of care (Chapman, 2013). As the complexity of healthcare increases and public expectation intensifies, so the need to provide IV th...
